Overview

Tsavo East and Tsavo West together form one of the world’s largest national parks, covering 4% of Kenya, famous for their marauding lions, herding elephants and scores of varied animals roaming over their broad savannahs.

Take a break from your beach vacation and safari out with us to explore two of our finest national parks. You’ll be looking for dozens of species on this short, easy 3-day adventure here.

Tsavo East National Park is the largest park in Kenya, and its sparse vegetation makes game spotting more accessible. You may see the unique Tsavo lions whose males lack the familiar big manes. And the elephants are known to roll in the park’s red-dust soil, showing off their bright coats on the way to one of the famous watering holes.

Tsavo West National Park on the other hand will offer you a different experience with its scenic hills, rich deep colors and lush springs. Expect to come upon the striking baobab trees as you track for the “Big Five” – lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant. This extensive park also offers habitats of monkeys and baboons. Let us know how you want to plan your safari vacation, and we’ll make it happen even if it’s spur of the moment!

Tour Plan

Day 01 Mombasa to Tsavo East (120 KMS – Approx. 3 hours)
  • The safari begins with a pickup at your beach hotel or resort. We’ll take the Mombasa – Nairobi Highway, viewing farmlands and Kenya countryside along the way.
  • The route to Tsavo East is fairly short and upon reaching the park, we’ll stop for refreshments before heading out on our first game drive. You’ll feel the safari excitement as we rumble over the broad grasslands looking for the larger and smaller wildlife like eland, impala, giraffe, and zebra.
  • After our first taste of this legendary park, we’ll break for lunch and fortify ourselves for more great game viewing during the afternoon. The pace will be relaxed – there will be plenty of time to discover the big game during our 3-day safari.
  • As we track for the wildlife all about us in this massive park, we’ll also get to witness one of Africa’s blazing sunsets.
  • Overnight at your Tsavo east safari lodge/ tented camp.
Day 02 Tsavo East - Tsavo West (60 km – Approx. 1 hr)
  • We will be up before the sun to watch the dawn illuminate the plains around us. The first wildlife awakens, venturing out into the open savannah as we experience the park coming to life.
  • After breakfast, we’ll venture forth once more in search of hunters and grazers. We’re sure to spot wildlife at Mudanda Rock, a whale-backed formation creating a natural dam. This unique watering hole is a natural draw for elephants and other animals looking for water in this wild and rugged park.
  • Later, take the short drive to neighboring Tsavo West. But this jaunt will also be a game drive as we cross from park to park looking for the “Big Five” and the lesser wildlife.
  • At Tsavo West National Park, we’ll make a stop at a unique enclosure – the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. This 70 sq. km (27 sq. mi) protected area is home to some 80 black rhino and is one of the few places where one can view these massive but shy creatures.
  • Overnight at your Tsavo west safari lodge/ tented camp.
Day 03 Tsavo West - Mombasa (240 kms – Approx. 5-6 hrs)
  • We’ll be up early again to make the most of our day. This is a pre-breakfast exploration of the park, for us… and the wildlife. And we’ll all enjoy the deepening colours of the land as the sun burns off the early morning dew.
  • Later, after breakfast, we’ll strike out for Mzima Springs. This unexpected oasis is fed by crystal-clear waters providing a living habitat for aquatic and land creatures. Its lush greenery stands in marked relief from the rugged plains of the park.
  • Take a nature walk under the raffia-lined shores, looking for hippo, crocodile, colourful fish and birds. Terrestrial wildlife flocks here as well, so be on guard for zebra and giraffe wandering amongst the acacia trees.
  • As afternoon approaches, it’s soon time to head back to the Kenya coast. We should have you back at your resort or hotel in the late afternoon or early evening.
