Overview

Watamu looks out over the Indian Ocean and enjoys a blinding white-sand beach and a soft breeze coming off the water. It’s a gorgeous slice of coastline and one that includes its own marine national park. Watamu (means “home of the sweet people” in Swahili) enjoys a friendly community feeling; it is a small although rapidly growing area where most people know and recognize each other. Watamu is a beautiful and peaceful village on the Kenya Coast a few kilometers from Malindi , nestled between pristine beaches and lush tropical forest. Since it was first settled as a remote Swahili outpost at Gedi, this area has remained a haven of peace and tranquility and is still one of the coast’s most undeveloped and natural areas.  Known for its unique, relaxed and laid back way of life, Watamu welcomes visitors seeking to chill out, explore and enjoy the wonders that it has to offer.

Tour Highlights

  • Deep Sea Fishing In Watamu – Watamu has received international recognition as a big game fish destination for serious anglers and hobbyists alike and plays host to a number of tournaments including the ILTTA World Championships. Snorkeling In Watamu Marine Park – Low tide is the best time to experience the wonders of the world underneath the surface, especially during spring low tide and you have ample sites to choose from as Watamu Marine Park is approximately six square miles with reefs that extend out almost one-quarter mile from the shore.
  • Scuba Diving In Watamu Marine Park – As a protected area, Watamu Marine Park is the site of pristine coral reefs that are constantly active with aquatic species, thanks in part to the efforts of the park authorities to protect the reef from anchor damage and other detrimental effects.
  • Tour Of Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve – The Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve is situated north of Mombasa, between the towns of Kilifi and Malindi, adjacent to Watamu. It represents the most significant protected area of tropical forest on the coast of East Africa.
  • Tour Of Gede Ruins – Since 1884 when Gede Ruins was first visited by Sir John Kirk, the site has been recognized for its archaeological value and today it is one of the most highly studied relics on the Kenyan Coast. The ruins were first noted as a Historical Monument in 1927.
  • Watamu Marine Park – Established in 1968, Watamu Marine Park became the first protected marine area in Kenya and eleven years later, the UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve Program identified the area as a Biosphere Reserve.
  • Mida Creek – Tidal ecosystems are some of the most intriguing in nature. Almost a 4-mile long tidal inlet, Mida Creek covers a little more than 12 square miles of mangrove forest, sand and mud flats, shallow areas of water and many other habitats.
  • Bio-Ken Snake Farm – If you have an interest in learning about some of the slithering animals that are found in the ecosystems of coastal East Africa, a visit to Bio-Ken Snake Farm with Nostalgic Safaris will give you an insightful herpetology tour that is sure to amaze and thrill you!
